Trace its origins back to 1938, when legendary frame builder Rene Herse founded “RENE HERSE.”
Today, Jan Heine, publisher of the American magazine Bicycle Quarterly, has rebranded his own company, COMPASS CYCLES, as RENE HERSE. He continues the brand based on the founder's philosophy: “Lightweight and high-performance, yet reliable enough for rough roads and long distances."

Inspired by and named after Umtanum Ridge, a rugged and isolated ridge in the central Cascade Mountains near Portland, Oregon.
The distinctive name Umtanum Ridge remains untouched by civilization, preserving the Native American name passed down through generations.

Umtanum Ridge's large, widely spaced knobs provide tenacious grip even in harsh road conditions.

The large, strategically placed knobs resist twisting, ensuring a consistent amount of rubber always contacts the road surface. This design achieves a high level of balance, combining the smooth rolling of a slick tire with the grip characteristic of a block tire on all surfaces.
