BLACK MOUNTAIN CYCLES, a small bike shop with passion and understanding towards bikes. Based in Point Reyes Station, CA, US.
Shortly after launching BMC, Mike had the opportunity to design a cyclocross frame. Drawing on everything he had learned over the previous 17 years—and everything he wanted from a drop-bar bike—the MONSTERCROSS was born.
Starting with the latest V6.2, a new 46cm size has been added to the lineup. The smallest 46cm size is the only one designed around 650B wheels, opening up the MONSTERCROSS to riders in the mid-150cm height range who previously didn’t have a suitable size option.
With generous clearance for tires up to 700×50c while still maintaining a light and lively ride, it’s a bike that can go fast, carry a load, or venture onto rough roads. More than anything, it’s simply a whole lot of fun to ride.
Classic details are found throughout, including the three cable stops along the top tube and old-school horizontal dropouts that make converting the bike to singlespeed nice and easy. At the same time, practicality hasn’t been overlooked: there are three bottle cage positions, including one underneath the down tube, plus plenty of rack and fender mounts throughout the frame.
Rather than chasing the latest standards, the MONSTERCROSS sticks with a timeless and straightforward design. And that simplicity is exactly what gives you so much freedom in how you build it—and how you ride it.
Mike Varley began his career designing countless frames for major manufacturers during the golden age of chromoly mountain bikes in the 1990s.
Then, in 2007, he arrived at the approach he still follows today: building his own frames and selling them through his own shop.
